The Sheriff is an elected official and the chief law enforcement officer of the county. An important duty is to provide law enforcement services to the unincorporated areas of the county; however, he maintains law enforcement jurisdiction in all cities and townships within the county.

The Sheriff is responsible for the protection of life and property. Enforcement includes criminal investigations, security of courtrooms, service of civil processes of the courts, school resource officers, animal control, and for the operation and maintenance of the county jail. In addition, the Sheriff's Office is responsible for the operation of the Emergency Communication Center. Each of these services must be provided 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.
