MAJOR CASE UPDATES

Captain Lansberry closed the Knott Construction Fraud case which resulted in over 90 guilty verdicts. Sentencing is February 14, 2024.

Lt Boyd worked diligently to bring closure to a victim of a sex offense in a case in Page County and Washington D.C.. He was able to secure a conviction in Circuit Court which resulted in a life sentence.

The Murder Trial of Scott Simandl took up two full weeks in May of 2023. The trial was intense, and the cross examination proved to be some of the toughest of my career, and the careers of everyone involved. At the end of the trial, he was convicted of 1st Degree murder, as well as the other charges that were brought based on the evidence. This was a success for our team and proved to be some of the best demonstrations of cooperative teamwork that I have ever seen between the agencies involved.

CID YEAR SUMMARY

2023 proved to be a very busy year for CID. Another homicide case took center stage on June 29th. A manhunt for the suspect ensued. Prior to his capture, two additional homicides occurred. This case is still ongoing and very active. Corporal Hall was promoted to Sergeant for his outstanding job performance and abilities. CID was able to upgrade our vehicle fleet with the addition of two new Durangos through ARPA funding. Even though the year has been busy, CID personnel have stepped up to the plate and gone above and beyond for the agency and the tasks at hand.

The CID unit is cohesive and strong. This is likely the strongest CID Unit we have had since I’ve been a part of this agency. Each investigator brings their own unique talent and experience to the unit, and in my opinion, makes us very strong. The experience level and knowledge that each investigator possesses is crucial to the success of our division and the department. I am proud to lead this team.
